7-Zip is a free, open-source file archiver for Windows that opens and creates compressed archives. It handles ZIP, 7z, TAR, GZ and many other formats, and can also extract RAR, ISO and CAB files. Its own 7z format usually produces noticeably smaller files than standard ZIP compression.
7-Zip adds handy options to the Windows right-click menu, so you can extract or compress files without opening the program. It also supports strong AES-256 encryption with password protection, splitting large archives into parts, and self-extracting archives.
The installer is tiny, the program is fast, and there are no ads, trials or nag screens — a big advantage over paid archivers. The interface looks dated and is a little technical for beginners, but the right-click menu covers most everyday needs.
