Free multi-track audio editor
Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor and recorder used for podcasts, voice-overs, music and cleaning up recordings. You can record from a microphone or capture computer audio, then cut, copy, trim and arrange clips on multiple tracks.
It includes a wide range of built-in effects: noise reduction, normalise, compressor, equaliser, fade in and out, pitch and tempo change, and more. Audacity imports and exports common formats such as WAV, MP3, FLAC and OGG, and supports plugins for extra effects.
The interface looks old-fashioned compared with paid audio software, and some tasks take a few more clicks than you might expect. Editing is mostly destructive, so it is worth saving project copies. For beginners and hobbyists who need to record or fix audio without paying for a professional digital audio workstation, Audacity is hard to beat.
