Free image editor, a Photoshop alternative
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free, open-source image editor and the best-known free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. It is used for photo retouching, image composition, digital painting and creating graphics for websites and social media.
GIMP supports layers, masks, selections, curves and levels, a large set of filters, and customisable brushes. It opens and saves many formats, including PSD files from Photoshop, PNG, JPEG, TIFF and its own XCF format that keeps all layers. Plugins and scripts extend it further.
The learning curve is steeper than simple photo editors, and the tools and menus are arranged differently from Photoshop, so experienced Photoshop users need time to adjust. It does not offer Adobe's cloud or AI features. For anyone who needs serious image editing without a monthly subscription, GIMP is a capable and completely free option.
