Voice, video and text chat for communities
Discord is a free voice, video and text chat app that started with gamers and is now used by communities of every kind — study groups, open-source projects, creators and friends. Communities are organised into servers, each with text channels and drop-in voice channels.
The Windows app offers clear voice chat with noise suppression, video calls, screen sharing, direct messages, and file sharing. Server owners can set up roles and permissions, add bots for moderation or music, and run events. An optional Nitro subscription adds larger uploads, higher-quality streaming and custom emojis.
Discord can use a fair amount of memory and runs in the background by default, which you can change in settings. Large servers can be noisy without good notification settings. For staying in touch with a group or running an online community, Discord is the go-to platform.
