Free alternatives to Evernote for Windows

Two free note apps keep your notes as files you control, and each suits a different way of working.

Closest in style to Evernote: notebooks, tags and a web clipper, with encrypted sync options.

Plain Markdown files with links between notes, and better for building a personal knowledge base.

What you give up

Evernote's polished web clipping and its search inside images. Sync takes a little setup.

Evernote is a trademark of its owner. SoftNest is not connected to it. Check each publisher's licence and pricing before you switch.
