Notepad++ is a free, open-source text and source-code editor for Windows and a big upgrade over the built-in Notepad. It starts instantly, uses very little memory, and is popular with programmers, web developers and anyone who edits text files.
It offers syntax highlighting and code folding for dozens of programming languages, tabbed editing, powerful search and replace with regular expressions across multiple files, macros for repeating tasks, auto-completion, and a plugin system for extra features such as comparing files or formatting JSON and XML. Notepad++ can also reopen your previous session with unsaved changes intact.
It is only available for Windows, and it is an editor rather than a full development environment. For quick edits, configuration files, logs and lightweight coding, Notepad++ is fast, reliable and completely free.
