Numerical computing language largely compatible with MATLAB
GNU Octave is a free language for numerical computing, with matrix operations, plotting and a graphical workspace. Its syntax is largely compatible with MATLAB, so many existing scripts run with few changes, which makes it popular with engineering students.
It lacks MATLAB's commercial toolboxes and Simulink, and heavy calculations can run more slowly, but for coursework and general numerical work it is a capable free option.
Pros
- Largely MATLAB compatible
- Free for students and professionals
- Graphical workspace
Cons
- No Simulink equivalent
- Can be slower than MATLAB
